Conditioning now a days is so important for players of all ages, that we really need to make sure that we are doing things that benefit us rather than hurt us. We will take up parts of conditioning for players of all ages in this section. Baseball is a game of explosion, short bursts of energy. Baseball is a game where we need to be able to use fast twitch muscles more than slow twitch muscles. Baseball players also need to be very flexible and loose to perform at the highest levels. I have not seen very many body builders that are good at throwing or hitting.
The most asked question I get is, "when can my kid get into the weight room and start a training program lifting weights?" I answer the question the same way every time. Curve balls, tackle football, and weight lifting, not until puberty. This is obviousley an old school way of thinking, and we all know that kids are all different in when they can start but I do not know every player, so I give them the generic answer for the safety of the player.
There are many things that young players can do to help their strength without going to the weight room and lifting like a work out monster. We will go over some of those things in this section as well.
In conditioning for baseball, we want to focus on strength, speed, power, flexibility, and endurance.
