In baseball, fear is the main mental barrier that we face. Fear can show it's ugly head with players of all ages. Psychologically, fear produces the reaction of trying too hard to control what is going on. Physically, fear produces certain bodily reactions. Blood flows to our bigger muscles so we have less feel in our hands and make poor decisions with our brains. Adrenaline flows freely and we get speedy and jumpy. The fear of a bad result can make our muscles tighten up during the act of swinging, throwing, fielding, etc. Fear can be different with each player. The fear of failing, fear of striking out, fear of being embarrassed, fear of letting down the team, fear of not throwing a strike, are all examples of fear in baseball. There are thousands of them. Having fear of the outcome is being outcome oriented. Baseball is such an "in the moment game", that we need to focus on the process of the action we are doing and not the outcome of the action we are doing. We need to dive into being the best we can with the swing, pitch, throw, etc. If we can pre accept the range of possible results that might follow, and commit fully to the process without letting anxiousness over the outcome inhibit our abilities, we will be able to fully enjoy and be comfortable with what ever situation arises. Also remember, whatever happens, life will go on and your friends and family will still like and love you. Truly forget about the outcome and focus on the process!
