The Parents Corner is a section where I will try and talk to the parents of players and give them tips on being a great fan of their player. Most of the parents I see at the different levels are mainly pretty good about being a fan and a good supporter. I love to see parents that support the players, the team, and the coaches of the team, no matter what is going on. Those are always my favorite parents as a coach. Those parents that don't get involved in the coaching decisions, support the team, no matter who is playing or how we are playing. I hear it all the time from coaches at all levels. "I am the coach, you are the parent. If you want to coach, get a team. I do not come to your work and try and tell you what to do better." It is that whole 'arm chair quaterback' scenario that most coaches cannot stand.
The other end of the spectrum from the perfect parent is, of course, the parent who is the one who knows it all and is disruptive to what is going on with the team. The one who is too hard on their player and the team and who second guesses every move the coach makes. I know these parents want the best for their player but they seem to go about trying to help in the wrong way.
We, as parents, need to be supportive, positive, and encouraging to our players and teams. (even around the dinner table) If we don't have anything positive to say about the team, coach, or player, let's not say anything at all.
Check back soon, as I am adding sections to this and all the others by the day.
